is the congress motto of the German Congress of Orthopaedics and Traumatology 2018.
Regardless of whether in the hospital, doctor’s in surgery, in the operating theatre, in the research laboratory, in the rehab clinic or in the emergency medical service: Orthopaedics and Traumatology stands for professional treatment of injuries and ailments of the locomotor system. This year’s congress motto We are O&Taddresses the variety and the wide range of our shared field. No other congress in Europe offers a larger platform for professional, collegial and academic exchange than the DKOU 2018.
10 years after the foundation of the German Society for Orthopaedics and Trauma (DGOU), the congress is the signature feature of the successful growing together of Orthopaedics and Traumatology in Germany. Outstanding examples for the efficiency of our work are the nation-wide Trauma Network and the endoprosthesis index that could be realised thanks to the extraordinary dedication of many individuals and the relentless work of our expert associations.
A current challenge is the digitalisation in O&T. Smart implants, wearables and big data applications have the potential to revolutionise our therapeutic options and are a major chance for the future. The downsides are the risks of a digital process optimisation and economisation, especially for the protection of the personal patient data entrusted to us. Here, all of us are required in order to shape this dynamic development.
A significant threat to patient safety are implant associated infections. They result in severe complications and are increasingly caused by multiresistent germs. Due to the high clinical relevance, we will take up this difficulty as a main topic. We will discuss both measures for improved prevention as well as solution strategies for the therapy of manifest infection.
The aspiration of the German Congress of Orthopaedics and Traumatology was a high contentual quality both with regard to the broadness of the field and with regard to the differentiation of the subspecialties. Sections and cooperating expert associations are noticeably integrated in the congress programme. For the representatives, this means that there is sufficient space for the presentation and discussion of the latest results in the different fields, be it in spine, hand and wrist, arthroscopic surgery or in sports medicine and rehabilitation. The participation of our guest nation, Great Britain, in the individual main topic sessions allows for border-crossing scientific and professional exchange which all participants will surely benefit from.
