Wim SchreursLetter from the President, Dr B Willem Schreurs

Dear All,

One of the privileges of being the President of the European Hip Society is having the chance to represent EHS in many meetings all over Europe. Travelling into the unknown really enriches your views on topics. Last week I was invited by Professor Tikhilov to visit Saint Petersburg to be part of a hip course.

It was impressive to see the state of the art of Orthopaedics in Russia and the progress that has been made over the last years. Of course, in some areas of Russia, total hip arthroplasty has just started causing problems with learning curves, however, some centres are really working on excellence.

It is important for the progress of hip surgery in Europe to have open minds and discussions about how local differences in treatment can influence outcomes. Hopefully, unexpected pearls from the East, like the introduction of the Ilizarov system in the past, can benefit us all in the care of our hip patients.

Another pearl that came late to hip orthopaedics worldwide was the dual mobility cup, which was around in France for a long time unnoticed to many other countries until its potential in the care of patients with a high risk for dislocation was appreciated.

Maybe new pearls are around the corner and hopefully these will be presented at the European Hip Society meeting in the Hague in 2018. For your information, we are now looking forward for abstracts, the website opened September 2017 and will be closed 15 March 2018.

Best wishes,

Your EHS President, B Willem Schreurs

Letter from the Secretary General, Associate Prof Eleftherios TsiridisTsiridis

Dear Members,

Like our President, three of the ExCom have been abroad representing EHS this week: Prof Epinette, Prof Karachalios and myself have been in Barcelona at the 54th SECOT meeting to present an EHS Symposium on Hip Developments from all over Europe. Prof Epinette spoke on: “What have we learned at 30 years of clinical experience with HA-coated hip arthroplasty?” and “Indications and Results of Dual Mobility Cups in Primary Hips”, while Prof Karachalios spoke on: “Total hip arthroplasty instability” and “Management strategies for severe femoral defects in revision total hip arthroplasty” and myself on: “Periprosthetic fractures around acetabulum, femur and knee an overview” and “Removing acetabular implants and socket reconstruction in revision hip surgery”.

This is part of an initiative from our EduCom to promote hip knowledge throughout Europe, which is our aim as EHS. Also towards this aim are the EHS Fellowships, running since the inaugural Visiting Fellowship last year in Hellas and followed by the Travelling Fellowship in France this summer. Each Fellowship offers the chance for two young hip surgeons to visit top orthopaedic centres of Europe to observe the experts at work on difficult hip cases. Watch out for the announcement of our next Travelling Fellowship very soon.

Meanwhile, our Visiting Fellows 2017, Antonios Koutalos and Jesús Moreta Suárez, had an excellent experience in Germany and will publish their report here next month. Thanks to the host, and especially to our Nat Rep, Prof Thorey.

Finally, thanks to our contributors this month, Dennis Janssen of The Netherlands and João Sarmento Esteves of Portugal.

Dear all,

In less than one year we will be hosting the bi-annual EHS meeting in The Hague, the Netherlands. The 13th congress of EHS meeting is the place for keeping up to date with the latest innovations in hip care and hip surgery, for discussions on treatment options, and for meeting up with the industry.

Preparations are full underway, the preliminary programme schedule already has been compiled, and abstract submission has been opened. Please visit our congress website, ehs-congress.org, for the latest information and for submitting your abstract.

Next to the scientific meeting, there will be ample time to reconnect with your hip friends during the social events. The Welcome reception will take place at the congress venue, the World Forum, while the congress dinner will be held at the Grand Hotel Amrâth Kurhaus. The Kurhaus is a historical seaside resort, and has hosted several Royal Families, but is also known for a notorious (and very brief) concert of the Rolling Stones. This special venue promises an exciting backdrop for the congress dinner!

While we continue working on the organisation of the 13th EHS congress, we look forward to welcoming you next year, September 20-22, in The Hague!

Best regards,

Dennis Janssen

Nowadays I think it’s very important to create channels of contact among hip surgeons that do the same pathology, have similar problems and difficulties and want to share expertise

EHS Young Member from Portugal, João Sarmento Esteves

Dear Mr President, Mr Secretary General and colleagues,

It’s a pleasure to become a member of a society that is so believed in; even more so because nowadays I think it’s very important to create channels of contact among hip surgeons that do the same pathology, have similar problems and difficulties and want to share expertise.

But first, let me introduce myself. My name is João Sarmento Esteves,  I’m an MD consultant with 2 years of specialisation. Actually I’m working in a public orthopaedic hospital unit and in a private clinic also, both in Lisbon.

My area of election is hip and pelvis and my weekly work constitutes about 1-3 total hip replacements, 1-2 hip arthroscopies, some hip prothesis revision and acetabulum/ pelvic trauma.

Like I said before, I hope that by joining EHS, I can create channels of communication, share hip surgery issues, attend events and meetings, and finally, promote the society in my own country amoung young hip colleagues.

Best regards,

João Sarmento Esteves
